The Hill was named for its proximity to the highest point in St.
Louis. Italians, mainly from Northern Italy, immigrated to the area
starting in the late 1800s; however, by 1910, Sicilians were also
immigrating to the Hill. Agencies in Italy were employed by mining
companies and other industries to help Italian citizens gather all
the required documentation for immigration. Italians came to the
Hill because of its proximity to the factory and the mines and
because it was a district that allowed them to purchase land and
build a home. The Parish of St. Ambrose was founded 1903. After the
original church was destroyed by fire, the new church was completed
in 1926. The Hill has been home to some of St. Louis's nationally
known residents, including baseball heroes Joe Garagiola and
Lawrence "Yogi" Berra.
"In the best John Feinstein tradition" ("Booklist") the greatest
college basketball story in decades--the Butler Bulldogs and their
improbable run to two straight NCAA National Championship
games--now updated in paperback.
Butler University in Indianapolis became the smallest school in
forty years to reach the NCAA championship game. Calculated as a
200-to-1 shot to win, Butler came "this close" to beating the
heavily favored, perennial leaders of college basketball: the Duke
Blue Devils in 2010. And in 2011, Butler advanced again to the
finals, ultimately losing to UConn--but accomplishing so much.
"Underdawgs" tells the incredible and uplifting story.
Butler's coach, thirty-three-year-old Brad Stevens, looked so young
he was often mistaken for one of the players, but he had quickly
become one of the best coaches in the nation by employing the
Butler Way. This philosophy of basketball and life, adopted by the
program, is based on five principles: humility, passion, unity,
servanthood, and thankfulness. Even the most casual observer could
see this in every player, on the court and off, from 2010 NBA
first-round draft pick Gordon Hayward to the last guy on the bench.
Much more than a sports story, "Underdawgs" is the consummate David
vs. Goliath tale--the Bulldogs proved they belonged in the
spotlight and, in the process, won the hearts of sports fans
everywhere.

Sci-fi horror. Scientist Dr Riley (Dee Wallace) launches a rocket
bound for space containing top secret nanobots but disaster strikes
when the craft crash-lands in a zoo and the nanobots find their way
into a 25-foot Australian crocodile, turning it into a
single-minded killing machine. Zookeepers Duffy (Corin Nemec) and
Jane (Lisa McAllister) race against time to stop the croc as its
kill count continues to rise. In their pursuit, they are shocked to
discover the body of the homicidal croc is transforming into metal,
making the cyber reptile an even stronger force to be reckoned
with.
The celebrated writer Álvaro Mutis envied new readers of Ida
Vitale’s poetry: “unexpected pleasures await them.” Time
Without Keys: Selected Poems is the first volume of Vitale’s
illustrious poetry to appear in the US. The selection spans
seventy-five years and the wonders within abound—the skies over
Montevideo, falconry, the saxifrage’s bloom, gratitude for the
alphabet and summer—as do urgent questions about our relationship
with the world. How does our perception of time shape history, as
well as our social and political constructs? Vitale’s poetic and
human vitality have made her a storied figure in the Spanish
language and beyond; her writing revered for being classic and
modern, precise and lucid, intellectually challenging and rich in
tradition. This bilingual edition, presented in reverse
chronological order, offers the reader both a wide range of
Vitale’s most beloved poems, as well as a wealth of recent work.
The translator Sarah Pollack, Vitale’s first translator into
English, has written an informative afterword about Vitale’s life
and work.

"a story's existence, even if not well defined or well assigned,
even if only in its formative stage, just barely latent, emits
vague but urgent emanations." Byobu's every interaction trembles
with possibility and faint menace. A crack in the walls of his
house, marring it forever, means he must burn it down. A stoplight
asks what the value of obedience is, what hopefulness it contains,
and what insensible anarchy it defies. In brief episodes,
aphorisms, and moments of spiritual turbulence and gentle scrutiny,
reside a wealth of habits, worries, curiosities, pleasures,
peculiarities, and efforts to understand. Representative of the
modesty and complexity of Ida Vitale's poetic universe, Byobu
flushes the world with meaning and playfully offers another way of
inhabiting the every day.
How is foreign policy made? Who makes it? To what conscious and
unconscious influences are policy-makers subject? What is
distinctive about the immensely complex process as it unfolds in
Britain? And what, therefore, is distinctive and characteristic
about Britain’s foreign policy today? Who in Britain, has the
decisive word? Why is the Foreign Office the king-pin of the
system? Why does Parliament count for so little? Does public
opinion count at all? Originally published in 1968, these are some
of the questions which this book considers in the course of a
tightly argued but very readable analysis. Some had been considered
on their own elsewhere, but this study represented the first
attempt by a contemporary political scientist to pull together, in
brief compass, all the relevant threads – including the
constitutional, the political, the institutional and the
sociological. It is done, moreover, on the basis of a sharp
assessment of the type of foreign policy problem that most notably
confronted Britain at the time. The author has been successively
journalist, official of the Israel Government, and university
lecturer in politics. Throughout, his special interests and
activities have been in the sphere of international affairs and it
was while teaching International Relations at the University of
Sussex that he wrote this book. He combines the experience of one
who has seen the policy being made from the inside with the
theoretical insight of the political scientist; he assesses with a
sympathetic but unemotional detachment the constraints on the
formation of British foreign policy.
In the nearly two years since Anthony Bourdain's death, no one else
has come close to filling the void he left. His passion for and
genuine curiosity about the people and cultures he visited made the
world feel smaller and more connected. Despite his affable,
confident, and trademark snarky TV persona, the real Tony was
intensely private, deeply conflicted about his fame, and an enigma
even to those close to him. Tony's devoted crew knew him best, and
no one else had a front-row seat for as long as his director and
producer, Tom Vitale. Over the course of more than a decade
traveling together, Tony became a boss, a friend, a hero and,
sometimes, a tormentor. In the Weeds takes readers behind the
scenes to reveal not just the insanity that went into filming in
some of the most far-flung and volatile parts of the world, but
what Tony was like unedited and off-camera. From the outside, the
job looked like an all-expenses-paid adventure to places like
Borneo, Vietnam, Iran, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Libya.
What happened off-camera was far more interesting than what made it
to air. The more things went wrong, the better it was for the show.
Fortunately, everything fell apart constantly.

Ask teachers about their biggest challenges in elementary and
middle school, and many will say the teaching of writing. It is
often difficult for students find the joy, discovery, and
satisfaction writing can yield. What Lisa Eickholdt and Patricia
Vitale-Reilly have found is that adherence to genre studies can get
in the way of student collaboration. Believing writing instruction
should be more authentic, they offer students more choices, develop
better collaboration, and sustain a sense of community, all through
the implementation of writing clubs. Writing clubs offer
opportunities to Collaborate throughout the process of writing
Choose what to write and how to write it Examine mentor texts and
study craft techniques across genres Develop speaking and listening
skills Celebrate classmates' accomplishments through publication
Collaboration is widely recognized as a vital life skill. Lisa and
Patty present a plethora of ideas on how gratifying it can be right
now, as well as in the future. There's an old proverb that says,
'If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with
others.' In Writing Clubs, we discover that there is no limit to
how far young writers can go when teachers show them what it means
to collaborate.
